Chapter Eleven
We couldnât rub shoulders with the stars all night, however, so we headed back out to the crowd, Daisy reluctantly; sheâd been chatting away with the young rapper, who turned out to be called Joe and was only seventeen. This had been his first big festival gig, and it was safe to say heâd aced it. I felt bad tearing her away from him â he seemed nice enough â but I didnât feel like backstage at a rock concert, surrounded by free booze and God knew what else, was a good place for me to leave her.
The headline act was about to start, a rock band that Iâd heard of but never actually heard.
âWhoâs this lot?â asked Nathan, peering over peopleâs heads to get a look at the four-piece who had just arrived onstage.
âAntwackie,â said Daisy enthusiastically. âTheyâre brilliant!â
âBetter than Joe?â I teased. She smiled ruefully.
âHe was really good, wasnât he? But this is more my sort of musicâ¦â She looked around at the crowd, and I guessed what she was thinking. Where was Jade? Theyâd probably planned to watch the band together.
âIâm sorry, sweetheart, but I do need to get the dog out of here,â I said gently, picking up my whimpering Pomeranian. âItâs too noisy for her. Maybe I could get Nana to look after her.â
âDaisy?â We all turned round to see Joe the rapper standing behind us, a little out of breath. Maybe heâd still not recovered from his set. Or maybe heâd run after us⦠He blushed as Nathan and I looked at him. âHi, sorry, I wondered if Daisy would like to watch the band with me?â he asked. âFrom out here, I mean. Itâs a bit much, back thereâ¦â He nodded towards the back of the stage.
âIâd love to!â said Daisy, looking at me with a silent plea in her eyes. Nathan and I exchanged glances.
âAre you all camping together?â asked Joe, looking at me and Nathan. âI promise Iâll get her back to your tent safely afterwards.â
I half expected Nathan to get his warrant card out and show Joe just how much trouble heâd be in if he didnât get Daisy back to us in one piece, but he just raised his eyebrows. I nodded.
âThatâs fine. Just remember that she is still only fifteen.â
âMum!â growled Daisy, and I knew sheâd make me pay later for embarrassing her. âIâm sixteen in two months.â
âIâm just saying, donât come back steaming drunk or anything, because if you end up with a massive hangover youâll get no sympathy from either of us.â I grinned. âHave a good time and,â I bent closer to her, âmake sure Jade and Ellie see who youâre with.â
She grinned. The two of them headed into the crowd and I turned to Nathan with a big smile on my face.
âWhat are you looking so pleased about?â he asked.
âMy little girlâs growing up,â I said. âLook at her. Sheâs so clever and funny and beautiful, isnât she? She deserves to enjoy herself. And Iâll only worry about her a little bit, because sheâs sensible, too.
